Fat City by Leonard Gardner
I always like books from the New York Review of Books and this one is no exception. "Fat City" by Leonard Gardner is a book about boxing. It is also about poverty, relationships, love, alcohol and loss. But it is mostly about boxing. I really enjoyed the book and my only complaint was that it was so short. Stockton, California wasn't a pretty place during this period of time. The cutting down of the trees to keep the winos out of the park seemed like a pretty severe reaction, but what do I know. It makes you feel very grateful that you do not have to pick oranges or asparagus for a living. It seems like backbreaking work, especially if you are hungover or have gotten beaten up beforehand. There are some pearls of beauty, especially about not living in the past, but I didn't highlight them or even write down what page they were on. I think I may have taken pictures, since everyone always has their phone in their pocket.
This book is about boxing.
